ABSTRACT

    This dissertation explores the cognitive underpinnings of the linguistic observation that there is a strong correspondence between the meanings of verbs and the syntactic contexts in which they occur. Building on the assumption that this correspondence is due to the fact that speakers’ prior experience with linguistic structures affects their subsequent behavior (priming), I propose the Verb Anchor hypothesis that holds that experience with a sentence leads to a cognitive association between the sentence’s verb and the syntactic frame the sentence instantiates and that when this association is strong, the verb serves as an ‘anchor’ of the frame. I predict that high semantic similarity between verbs leads to an increase in the likelihood of speakers’ choosing the same syntactic frame across sentences. More precisely, the more semantically similar a verb is to the anchor, the more likely speakers are to choose the same frame as the frame associated with the anchor. I examine the Verb Anchor Hypothesis in two related but separate contexts of use. First, four syntactic priming experiments investigate whether an anchor formed via speakers’ immediate sentence experience (the recent anchor of a frame) affects syntactic frame selection in subsequent sentence production. Second, two sets of corpus analyses investigate whether an anchor that results from repeated experience of association between verb and syntactic frame (the typical anchor of a frame) influences the syntactic realization of verbs that are semantically similar to the anchor and have similar syntactic options. Overall, the studies this thesis report on support the Verb Anchor hypothesis and provide a partial answer to the question why verbs with similar meanings tend to occur in similar syntactic contexts. They thus contribute to answering the ultimate question of why grammars of language are the way they are.

The Lesson of Pater: Narrative Portrait as a Form for Re-visionary Commemoration in The Portrait of a Lady and A Small Boy and Others

2016년은 소설가 헨리 제임스 사망 100주년이 되는 해였다. 이에 100년 후의 연구자들이 한 작가를 기념하는 이유와 더불어 제임스에게 있어서 과거를 기억하는 것의 의미를 되짚어 보는 학술 행사들이 여러 장소에서 열렸다.  이러한 계기로 본 발표자는 제임스가 사망하기 3년 전 윌리엄 제임스를 추모하기 위해 출판한 A Small Boy and Others 에서 제임스가 제시한 추모 서사의 형식과 의미를 탐색하게 되었고, 그 과정에서 결국 자서전의 일부가 된 제임스의 이 자기 기념 서사에 끼친 월터 페이터의 영향에 주목하게 되었다. 특히 페이터가 1878년 Macmillan\'s Magazine에 출간한 \"Imaginary Portrait, I: The Child in the House\"는  단편소설의 형식을 띄었지만 사실상 페이터의 자서전적 기록으로서, 성숙한 저자의 입장에서 어린 시절의 모습을 그려내는 서사를 \"초상화\"라는 비유를 통해 정의한다는 점에서, 그리고 어린 자신이 과거와 단절했던 순간을 마지막 장면에 극적으로 압축하여 묘사한다는 점에서 제임스의 산문과 비교할 만 하다. 중요한 것은, 본 발표의 핵심을 이룰 내용으로, 페이터의 이 \"초상화\" 형식이 1880년에서 1881년에 걸쳐 제임스가 Macmillan\'s Magazine에 연재했던 장편 소설 The Portrait of a Lady의 형식에 반면교사가 되었다는 점이다. 페이터와 제임스가 주고 받은 영향 관계는 대략적으로 제임스가 페이터의 유미주의를 강도 높게 비판했다는 사실에 초점을 두고 이해되어 왔으며, 둘 사이의 직접적 교류에 대해서는 드러난 바가 적다. 하지만, 이 두 사람이 맥밀란이라는 출판사를 통해 영국 출판 시장에서 공통의 독자군을 대상으로 작품 활동을 했다는 점을 고려할 때, \"The Child in the House\"에서 행한 페이터의 유미주의 자기 수정과 The Portrait of a Lady에 드러난 제임스의 유미주의 비판은 담론장 속에 놓인 두 사람 간, 그리고 그 외 행위자들과의 사이에서 일어난 매우 긴밀한 조우의 결과물이라고 볼 수 있다. 이 측면에 주목한다면 제임스가 발전시킨 \"초상화\"는 독자들이 (궁극적으로 자기 추모로서) 대상에 대해 반추하는 과정을 담는 서사 형식으로서, 페이터가 공동체를 구성하는 기본 감정으로 멜랑콜리에 바탕한 자기 포기와 승화를 초상화적 서사의 목표로 삼은 것에 반대하여 의도적으로 이에 대비되는 정동으로서 \"불편함\"과 자기 의문을 추동하려 했던 형식이었음이 드러난다. 유사한 기법이 30년 후 제임스의 자서전적 산문에서 다시 한 번  반복되며, 제임스에게 있어 기억과 추모란 결국 과거에 대한 재해석을 불가피하게 하는 일종의 소격 효과를 생산한다는 것이 본 발표의 결론이 될 것이다.

The Cult of Athleticism in Virginia Woolf’s The Waves

Virginia Woolf’s 1931 novel The Waves portrays a cult of athleticism that occurs in an English public school: while cricketers emerge as idols, other boy come to worship them. The making of athletic heroes is destabilized through the iconoclastic reflections of the novel’s characters. This paper seeks to explore the ways in which the characters act as iconoclasts who cause to challenge the making of idols in the public school.

The effect of surface grammatical variations on the processing of a long-distance dependency

In this talk, I present a series of experiments that investigated how surface grammatical variations affect on-line dependency formation. In the first ERP experiment, I show that despite the different surface word order (English: filler-gap dependency vs. Japanese, Korean and Chinese: gap-filler dependency), similar cognitive mechanisms underlie the processing of a long-distance dependency. In the eye-tracking experiment, I investigate the effects of cataphoric dependency formation on temporary structural ambiguity, comparing the results with those of anaphoric dependency formation. The results suggest apparent differences in the processing of the two types of dependencies. These results are discussed in terms of universal and/or structural specific parsing strategies.
