The primary theme of Soohyun’s research program is to analyze the composite effects of grammatical, social, and articulatory constraints that give rise to linguistic variation and change. She seeks to disentangle the influence of layers of factors that are usually grouped together. To the end of creating a maximally explanatory model of language variation and change, she pursues cross-disciplinary studies and draw upon varied methods, including speech corpora, experimental paradigm and computational methods. Recent articles include “Phonetic and Phonological Changes of Noam Chomsky: A Case Study of Dialect Shift” (American Speech 93, 2018) and “Testing the productivity of the short-a tensing rule in Philadelphia: The computational framework” (Studies in Phonetics, Phonology and Morphology 25, 2019).
