How learning a language can change you: Spontaneous imitation of Korean and English stops by Seoul Korean-English bilingual speakers

Previous research on spontaneous speech imitation shows that speakers shift their productions in the direction of the model speech that they have just heard (e.g., Goldinger, 1998); that is, what listeners perceive influences what listener-turned-speakers produce. This finding suggests that speech perception and production are closely related, but the role that phonological grammar plays in the perception-production link remains a matter of substantial debate. In this talk, I will present my recent works which examine the role of native and second language phonology in spontaneous speech imitation by Seoul Korean-English bilingual speakers. The overarching goal is to better understand the cognitive link between speech perception and production.

The first half of the talk aims to reveal the cognitive representations that are responsible for speech imitation, asking whether they are detailed acoustic properties or abstract phonological categories. By examining how two phonetic cues for aspirated stops in Seoul Korean (stop voice onset time and post-stop f0) operate in spontaneous imitation, I will provide evidence that speech imitation is mediated by language-specific associations between acoustic properties and phonological categories. In the second half, I will report findings from an imitation study with Seoul Korean-English bilingual speakers. Seoul Korean and English differ substantially in terms of the association of phonetic cues with corresponding phonological categories. The results suggest that proficient bilingual speakers do not rely on their native phonology in performing imitation tasks in their second language. I will discuss the implications of these findings for the perception-production link as well as for the relation between L1 and L2 phonological grammars.
